How is FibroScan different from a traditional biopsy?
A newer technique for diagnosing fatty liver disease uses a specialized ultrasound-based machine to measure scarring and fat buildup, called fatty change, in your liver. Like other ultrasound exams, FibroScan is painless, easy, and quick. And because it’s non-invasive, it doesn’t come with the same risks as an invasive biopsy.
A FibroScan doesn’t require any special preparation, although you may be asked not to eat or drink for a few hours before the FibroScan. It is completely painless, no sedation is necessary, and it only takes a few minutes to complete. - During Test: A Fibroscan uses a technology known as transient elastography to measure the stiffness of the liver. This gives an accurate guide to the amount of scar tissue (fibrosis) present. You simply lie on a couch, and the Fibroscan device is held over your liver while readings are taken. The process is non-invasive and painless and takes around 10 minutes.
- After the Test: The Fibroscan results are available instantly, and your consultant or nurse will discuss the results with you. You might need further diagnostic tests. Any additional costs will be discussed before further tests are carried out.
