A colon transit study is a diagnostic test that will permit your doctor to estimate the function of your colon. The colon is the lower part of the GI tract and is about 5 feet extended. The colon transports meals from your small intestine to your rectum. This study can assist your doctor to determine a diagnosis and the best treatment for you.
You will be given a tablet(capsules) to swallow. The tablet has tiny plastic rings that will pass naturally via the digestive tract just as food does. An x-ray will be taken 5 days after the tablet was taken to determine the digit of rings left in your digestive tract. This will allow your doctor to determine what kind of situation you may have and how to treat it.
You may have to change into a clinic dress for your study.
You will be requested to lie on a test table for your abdominal x-ray. Once the x-ray is taken, you will be asked to wait while the physician looks at your image. If there are still several attributes (6 or more) present in your digestive system, you may be asked to return in a couple of days for another x-ray (Day 7). If most of the attributes have passed (<6 left), the exam is done. If not, you may be ordered to come around in 3 days (Day 10) for other abdominal x-rays. Day 10 is the last day.
Remember to plan the abdominal x-ray for the colon transit study 4 and 7 days after you bear the first capsule.
There are some potential risks associated with the colon transit study. These include exposure to radiation from the X-rays and the chance of the capsule becoming lodged in the digestive tract. However, these risks are relatively common and can be controlled through careful screening and monitoring of patients during the test.
